MNRF Enacts Fire Ban Starting May 16 to Reduce Human-Caused Fires Amid Escalating Danger

THUNDER BAY, ON – As wildfire conditions intensify across Northwestern Ontario, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) has declared a Restricted Fire Zone (RFZ) for portions of the Northwest Fire Region, effective 12:01 a.m. Friday, May 16, 2025.

The move comes in response to extreme fire hazard conditions, with the goal of reducing the risk of human-caused wildfires as crews battle escalating fires across the region.

Affected Areas

The Restricted Fire Zone covers a vast area stretching from:

  • The southwest corner where Ontario, Manitoba, and the USA borders meet,

  • North along the Manitoba border to west of Weeskayjahk Ohtahzhoganeeng Provincial Park,

  • East to just north of Wabakimi Provincial Park,

  • South along the western border of Wabakimi to the eastern edge of Quetico Provincial Park,

  • Then west along the Canada-USA border back to Manitoba.

This includes significant areas of Quetico, Wabakimi, and surrounding forested regions popular for camping, fishing, and paddling.

What the Fire Ban Means

  • No open air burning or campfires are permitted within the RFZ boundaries.

  • Portable gas or propane stoves may be used for cooking and warmth, but must be used with extreme caution.

  • All burning permits are suspended until further notice.

Officials stress that the RFZ will remain in place until conditions improve and urge residents, visitors, and outdoor enthusiasts to adhere strictly to the restrictions.

The MNRF reminds the public that violations can result in hefty fines or charges under the Forest Fires Prevention Act.
