THUNDER BAY – NEWS – Thunder Bay Fire Rescue (TBFR) crews responded to a major structure fire on Fairbrooke Street in the city’s north side just before 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
The first unit on scene reported heavy smoke billowing from the residence and immediately escalated the situation by requesting a second alarm, signaling the need for additional resources due to the fire’s severity.
Initial assessment revealed visible flames exiting from utility vents and exterior siding on one side of the house, while flames were also spotted through a basement window on the opposite side, indicating the fire had already made significant progression.
Residents Evacuate Safely, Firefighters Launch Coordinated Attack
Fortunately, the homeowner confirmed that all occupants had safely evacuated before crews arrived, allowing firefighters to immediately focus on suppressing the blaze.
Firefighters began their efforts with an exterior attack to knock down the flames, then transitioned to an interior assault as more units arrived. Despite the aggressive spread of fire, TBFR crews worked methodically, battling flames that had traveled from the basement up through concealed wall cavities to the main and second floors.
Thanks to the swift and strategic response, the fire was brought under control—though the home sustained extensive smoke, fire, and water damage.
Investigation Underway; Public Safety Reminder from TBFR
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
In the wake of this serious incident, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is urging all residents to take fire safety seriously:
✅ Ensure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home
🚪 Plan and practice a home escape plan with all family members
📞 In any emergency: Call 911 and evacuate immediately
“The quick actions of the homeowner, including evacuating and calling 911, very likely prevented a tragic outcome,” said TBFR officials. “This is a strong reminder that preparedness and working alarms save lives.”
