Three New Wildfires Reported in Northeast Region; One Remains Active Near Currie Lake

Sault Ste. Marie – WILDFIRE REPORT – NETNEWSLEDGER – Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) has confirmed three new wildland fires in Ontario’s Northeast Region as of 5:40 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

πŸ”₯ New Fires Confirmed Today

  • Sudbury 10 (SUD010):
    A 0.1-hectare fire reported in Grundy Lake Provincial Park, about 1 km east of Gurd Lake. This fire has since been declared out.

  • Sudbury 11 (SUD011):
    Another 0.1-hectare fire, this one on the west side of Maple Lake. It has also been extinguished.

  • Timmins 2 (TIM002):
    A 0.1-hectare fire on an island at the north end of Currie Lake remains not under control at this time.

There are currently three active wildland fires in the Northeast:

  • 1 fire not under control

  • 2 fires under control


πŸ”₯ Fire Hazard Conditions

The wildland fire hazard is generally low to moderate across much of the Northeast today. However, certain regions are experiencing higher risk:

  • Chapleau

  • Kirkland Lake

  • Englehart

  • The corridor from Markstay-Warren south to Parry Sound

🚫 Drone Safety Reminder: “No Drone Zone”

AFFES is reminding the public that flying drones near wildfires is illegal and dangerous. Unauthorized drones can interfere with aerial firefighting operations and put lives at risk.

As fire crews remain active across the province, residents are asked to exercise extreme caution with any outdoor burning:

  • Burn only no earlier than two hours before sunset

  • Fires must be extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise

  • Always have adequate tools and water on-site to control the fire

  • Consider composting or using your local landfill for debris instead
