Traffic Stop on Highway 17 Leads to Impaired Driving Charges Near Marathon

An evening patrol by the Ontario Provincial Police in Marathon resulted in impaired driving charges following a high-speed traffic stop on Highway 17 in Pic Township.

According to the Marathon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the incident took place at approximately 9:20 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, when an officer observed a vehicle travelling well above the posted speed limit on a stretch of Highway 17.

A traffic stop was conducted, and during the roadside interaction, the officer detected clear signs of impairment from the driver. The suspect was immediately placed under arrest and transported for further evaluation, which confirmed the presence of alcohol in the driver’s system above the legal limit.

Accused Identified and Charged

Shane LEBOEUF, 60, of Sault Ste. Marie, has been formally charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with the following offences:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol

  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

As per Ontario’s impaired driving laws, the accused received an Automatic 90-Day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) and a 7-day vehicle impoundment.

LEBOEUF is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Marathon on July 16, 2025.
