The 2025 wildfire season continues to keep fire crews busy across Northern Ontario. Today, two new wildland fires were confirmed in the Northeast Fire Region, adding to the list of active fires already under observation and suppression.

New Fires Confirmed

  • Sudbury 17 (SUD017): This wildfire measures approximately 0.1 hectares and is located on the north side of Whitefish Lake, about 2 kilometres southeast of Naughton. The fire is not under control and crews are actively responding.

  • Sudbury 18 (SUD018): Also measuring 0.1 hectares, this fire is burning on a peninsula on the east side of Little Trout Lake. Like Sudbury 17, it is also not under control.

Current Fire Activity Across the Region

At the time of this update, there are four active wildfires in the Northeast Region:

  • 1 fire is under control

  • 2 fires are not under control

  • 1 fire is being observed

Fire Hazard Conditions

The wildland fire hazard ranges from moderate to high throughout much of the Northeast Region. Areas surrounding Fort Albany First Nation currently report low hazard conditions due to recent rainfall. Safety Reminder: No Drone Zone

The Ministry reminds the public that flying drones near wildfires is both dangerous and illegal. Unauthorized drones put the lives of firefighters, pilots, and emergency personnel at serious risk. If you see a drone near an active wildfire, report it immediately.

Outdoor Burning Rules Still in Effect

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) urges all residents and visitors to use extreme caution when burning outdoors. Composting or using local landfill services is encouraged over burning yard waste.

If you must burn, remember:

  • Fires must be ignited no sooner than two hours before sunset

  • Fires must be fully extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise

  • You must have adequate tools and water on hand to control the fire at all times

  • Follow Ontario’s complete Outdoor Burning Regulations

Report Wildfires Immediately

  • North of the French and Mattawa Rivers: Call 310-FIRE

  • South of the French and Mattawa Rivers: Call 911

AFFES crews remain vigilant as the summer fire season intensifies across Ontario. Stay informed, stay safe, and help prevent wildfires in your community.
